The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about a wave of SMS phishing attacks (also known as smishing) baiting you into resolving unpaid toll road fees.
The smishing scheme has been active since last month. Since then, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has documented more than 2,000 people across various states who’ve received the deceptive texts.
Here’s a sample malicious message:
The FBI asked those who receive one of these SMS phishing messages to:
- File a complaint with the IC3 at ic3.gov, and include the scammer’s phone number and the website listed within the text.
- Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.
- Contact the toll service’s customer service phone number.
- Delete any smishing texts received.
- If you click any link or provide your information, make efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. You should dispute any unfamiliar charges immediately.
